New Movies on Demand: ‘Midsommar,’ ‘Crawl,’ ‘Child’s Play,’ and More

How is it the end of the month already? Time flies when you’re having fun, we guess! The fun is not slowing down any time soon, because the workweek is over and that means it is time to take a break. You’ve got about 48 hours of total freedom at your fingertips, so do with them what you choose. And if you happen to find yourself sitting on the couch for some of them, why not pop in a movie? And whether you use Amazon Video, iTunes, Vudu or your cable’s on demand service, your favorite VOD platforms have you set with a brand-new of movies for you to check out.

This weekend we are in the mood to make you scream, so all of our featured movies have a fun horror twist. For those man-versus-beast fans, then Crawl may be the movie for you. This disaster survival film is about a father and daughter who are trapped in their basement with a bunch of bloodthirsty alligators during a Category 5 hurricane. And Chucky fans can rejoice because the 2019 Child’s Play is finally available to watch from the comfort of your own home. This Child’s Play marks the reboot of the original 1988 franchise of the same name, and we are excited to see what new and twisted effects we will see from our favorite demonic doll.

Curious about what else is out there? Check out what other horrors, romantic comedies and dramas you can buy or rent this week.

Midsommar

Horror films don’t necessarily have to be set in the dark, as we’ve recently learned from watching Midsommar. Midsommar is a psychological horror about a group of friends who travel to Sweden to take part in a remote and mysterious festival that occurs only every 90 years. What starts off as a joyful celebration turns out to be a bright nightmare that displays every horror in well-lit, gruesome detail. Starring Florence Pugh (The Falling), Jack Reynor (What Richard Did) and William Jackson Harper (The Good Place), Midsommar is the type of twisted horror film that not even a nightlight will help you fall asleep at night.

Crawl

Forget Jaws, after watching the disaster survival horror film Crawl, alligators will be your new worst nightmare. Crawl is the skin-crawling brainchild of director Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes) and producer Sam Raimi (Evil Dead, Spider-Man). Set in Florida during a category five hurricane, the movie follows a father and daughter (and their dog) who realize they are trapped in their flooding house with a couple of alligators on the hunt. With time ticking until they are stuck completely underwater, Kaya Scodelario and Barry Pepper’s characters must try to free themselves from impending death by the alligator, drowning, or both.

Ex Machina

Screenwriter Alex Garland’s (28 Days Later) smashing directorial debut was Ex Machina, a sci-fi film about a Turing test gone horribly wrong. Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson) is a brilliant programmer who is invited by his company’s CEO (Oscar Isaac) to come to his secluded home/personal lab to test out his latest creation: an extremely-intelligent and advanced android. Oscar’s character wants Caleb to conduct a Turing test on the A.I., Ava (played by the incredible Alicia Vikander), to see if she is actually capable of thought and consciousness. This fantastic—and a bit psychotic—film tests both Caleb and the audience’s perceptions of what is truly real. Ever thought your boss was a robot? Well, after watching this movie, you may be convinced!
