Eddie Murphy might just be back for real this time, thanks to the upcoming Netflix original film, Dolemite Is My Name. Netflix dropped the first trailer for the biopic on Monday, which stars Murphy as Rudy Ray Moore, an actor, writer and comedian best known for his 1975 blaxploitation crime film Dolemite.
Before his success, Moore was struggling to break into the entertainment industry, so he assumed an alter ego he called Dolemite, a pimp who got into all kinds of obscene shenanigans. (And he often uttered catchphrase that inspired the Netflix title: “Dolemite is my name.”) Against all odds, Moore got a Dolemite movie made, it was a box office success, and remembered as one of the definitive blaxploitation films.
Dolemite Is My Name is directed by Hustle & Flow‘s Craig Brewer, and written by American Crime Story creators Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski. In addition to Murphy, the Dolemite Is My Name cast includes stars like Keegan-Michael Key, Da’Vine Joy Randolph Mike Epps, Wesley Snipes, Craig Robinson, Tituss Burgess, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Snoop Dogg, Ron Cephas Jones, Barry Shabaka Henley, Tip ‘TI’ Harris, Luenell, and Tasha Smith. Ruth E. Carter, who won the Academy Award for Costume Design for 2018’s Black Panther, handled the ’70s-inspired costumes.

WHEN IS THE DOLEMITE IS MY NAME RELEASE DATE?
Dolemite Is My Name does not yet have a set release date yet, but it will have its world premiere at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival, which is September 5–15, 2019.
WHEN DOES DOLEMITE IS MY NAME COME OUT ON NETFLIX?
All we know so far is that Dolemite Is My Name will be in “select theaters and on Netflix this fall.” The release will be after the film’s premiere at TIFF in early September. Assuming Netflix will follow the same strategy it did for other theatrically-released Netflix originals, such as Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma, the film will have a limited 2 or 3 week theatrically release before it is added to Netflix.
