New Movies on Demand: ‘The LEGO Movie 2,’ ‘Glass,’ ‘The Kid Who Would Be King,’ and More

In today’s divisive times when it seems like no one can agree on anything, we can all at least agree on one thing: it’s the weekend. What you choose to do with your weekend is up to you, but I think I know what you’re into if you’re reading this here article. You like watching movies on VOD! Whether you use Amazon Video, iTunes, Vudu or your cable’s on demand service, there are a lot of new releases out there waiting for you to discover.

Available to rent this weekend are two big releases from early 2019: M. Night Shyamalan’s superhero trilogy-closer Glass, and the all-ages Arthurian adventure The Kid Who Would Be King. If you want to watch something brand new, you can buy the Alec Baldwin/Salma Hayek comedy Drunk Parents, which is now available via VOD. The film also stars Joe Manganiello, Jim Gaffigan, Ben Platt, and–I’m not joking–Cody from Step By Step (a.k.a. Sasha Mitchell).

What else can you buy or rent this week? Find out by taking a look at the collection of animated adventures, cheeky docs, and beautiful nature films now available for you to enjoy from the comfort of your very own home!

The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part

Picking up where the surprise mega-hit of 2014 left off, LEGO Movie 2 reunites audiences with their fave minifig protagonists Emmet and Wyldstyle in an all-new adventure. This time around the threat comes form above, literally, as Duplo invaders crash into Bricksburg, bringing about an apocalypse. Will Arnett returns for his third outing as LEGO Batman, and Alison Brie reprises her role as Unikitty. New addition Tiffany Haddish voices Queen Watevra Wa’Nabi, one of the shape-shifting aliens. You can buy this adventure right now, but you’ll have to wait until May 7 to rent it.

The Gilligan Manifesto

Who says ’60s sitcoms weren’t deep? Not director Cevin Soling, the filmmaker that crafted this feature-length analysis of the goofy kid-friendly sitcom Gilligan’s Island. It turns out, the whole show was a metaphor for communism at the height of the Cold War! Does this sound nuttier than a coconut to you? If you love old sitcoms, Marxist principles, or just appreciate deep dives into fan theories, then consider renting this doc.

The LEGO Movie

If you want to play catchup before reconnecting with this franchise, you’ll be stoked to know that you can rent The LEGO Movie (the first one) for just under a dollar! Not only did this hit movie introduce us to hilarious characters like Will Arnett’s gravel-voiced emo Batman, it also introduced us to a completely new style of animation. Plenty of LEGO-filled feature films have been released since this one in movie theaters and on VOD, but none of them are as ambitious or emotionally resonant as the very first one. Relive this adventure now for a fraction of the rental cost!
