Elmo Invades ‘Game of Thrones’ to Teach the Lannisters About Respect

Who will win Game of Thrones? Will it be Jon Snow, aka Aegon Targaryen? Cersei Lannister and her Golden Company? Daenerys and her dragons? Or could Westeros be led and saved by a surprising outsider? Yesterday, HBO introduced the possibility that Elmo from Sesame Street could be more important to the Game of Thrones finale than we ever thought. Well, sort of.

Now that HBO owns Sesame Street, they occasionally stage cross-over shorts where our favorite friendly and furry monsters interact with the NSFW characters from HBO’s prestige dramas. Yesterday HBO debuted one such short wherein “Elmo of Sesame Street” interrupts a tense discussion between Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) and Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) in King’s Landing. Elmo introduces a bold new concept to the warring siblings: the idea of respect.

“When Elmo has a problem with his friends like Abby or Cookie Monster, Elmo doesn’t get upset. Elmo listens and learns from what they have to say,” he tells the Game of Thrones characters.

Surprisingly, Elmo’s simple argument seems to cut through to Tyrion and Cersei better than dragonfire or the threat of White Walkers ever could. Tyrion, of course, is open to working together, but the real shocker is when Cersei says she’ll try to respect her younger brother.

Obviously this short is not Game of Thrones canon, but wouldn’t it be fun if it were? What if it were possible to see the conflict in Westeros resolved thanks to diplomacy? Oh, who are we kidding. We want to see violence and death in the final season of Game of Thrones. Sorry, Elmo.
