CBS All Access’s The Good Fight‘s never suffered from a lack of strong characters, but today’s brand new episode introduces the wildest personality to ever grace the series. Michael Sheen plays Roland Blum, a controversial attorney and agent of chaos. He hangs out with hookers, lies in court, shoves drugs up his butt, and is obsessed with mentor Roy Cohn. He is a delight to watch, and it is a bonkers must-see performance.
The Good Fight Season 3, Episode 2 opens with Roland Blum appraising Maia Rindell’s (Rose Leslie) cheeky website while injecting what we believe to be botox into his face. He might also be getting a blow job at the same time. Roland’s crazy like that, you see. Later we find that Blum is the lawyer representing a client who is being tried along with Maia’s separate client for murder. Maia is handling the case by the books, and losing. Roland blows up her strategy and uses scam artist methods to disrupt the trial.
We learn that Blum was one of Roy Cohn’s proteges. In fact, it’s fairly obvious that he’s meant to be a stand in for the corrupt real life character who mentored Donald Trump and Roger Stone. On the one hand, he’s a delicious villain for The Good Fight. He represents everything that the attorneys of Reddick, Boseman & Lockhart stand for. On the other hand, he’s a welcome devil whispering in Maia Rindell’s ear. For the last two seasons, Maia has been a wee bit…boring. She’s not the most active character in The Good Fight, and this season that looks to be changing. Last week Marissa Gold (Sarah Steele) gave Maia a much-needed pep talk about asserting herself, and Roland Blum inspires the young lawyer to use her imagination more.
But, yes, Roland Blum shoves drugs up his butt. And he introduces Maia to fentanyl lollipops. And he walks around with his pants off and quotes Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s “Kubla Khan” in a thick New York accent. Michael Sheen’s performance on The Good Fight is completely over-the-top and it’s wonderful.
