This ‘Schitt’s Creek’ Joke Is Even More Amazing When You Realize It Started Five Episodes Ago

Schitt’s Creek is smarter than all of us. Just in case you didn’t already know, the latest episode, and one joke in particular, proved that they are operating on another level of comedy we are simply grateful to witness.

In Episode 10 of Season 5, David (Dan Levy) and Stevie (Emily Hampshire) head to a flea market to sell goods from Rose Apothecary. And surprise! David’s old boss Wendy (Robin Duke) from Blouse Barn is also at the flea market selling goods with her new business partner Antonio (Salvatore Antonio). And if Antonio’s vibe feels…familiar, it’s for a good reason.

“You look very familiar, have I seen you in my store before?” David asks.

“I don’t think so,” Antonio replies flatly.

Once he walks away, David tells Wendy, not quite so genuinely, “He seems sweet.”

“He reminds me a lot of you,” she confesses.

“Well isn’t that a compliment…for him,” David slam dunks. “I have definitely seen that guy in my store before,” he tells Stevie. And guess what: he definitely has.

In Episode 6 of this season, Antonio himself is seen browsing in the background of a scene. While David is convincing Patrick (Noah Reid) that he should totally call the guy that handed him his number and go on a date with another dude since he’s never done that before, Antonio is creeping around and clocking the inventory at the store.

Look, there he is:

Schitt's Creek easter egg, episode 6
Pop TV

Some eagle eye viewers in Canada, who get the episode one night before American audiences do on Pop TV, tweeted their excellent findings.

And even though it turns out Antonio was not only ripping off David’s vibe, his store, and also Wendy, my god what a brilliant easter egg to plant in this show, and an even better payoff five whole episodes later. It was funny on its own, watching David interact with and severely judge Antonio (and rightly so), but to find out he was right and did recognize that guy from lurking around the story is not only a sweet, sweet justification but so, so funny. That Schitt’s Creek went through the extra step of having the receipts of that dude in Rose Apothecary earns them a long, loud round of applause. Go ahead, keep impressing us every single week, why don’t you.
