5 Things I Learned Behind The Scenes at The Puppy Bowl, The Most Adorable Event of The Year

I went to the Puppy Bowl. I know the look on your face right now because I saw it many, many times when I told friends and family I was attending the exclusive, utterly adorable event. And it totally lived up to the hype.

This year, the Puppy Bowl will air on Animal Planet on Sunday, February 3rd at 3pm ET/ 12 PT and features 93 pups from 51 animal shelters across 20 states. After competing in the most fun and fuzzy event of the year, these furry friends will hopefully be on their way to their forever homes — and their new families are the true winners. All of the puppies competing are cute and cuddly and love to play, and watching them proved to be just as much fun.

But as you can imagine, there’s a lot going on behind the scenes of the big game too. Here are just a few secrets you might be wondering about, delightfully shocked by, and totally able to share with pals at your big game party:

  • There is a wonderful human being whose job it is to pick up on-turf turds. In this case he stood on the side of the field wearing gloves, ready to spring into action whenever duty called (and it rang several times as I observed).
  • The pups had to be broken up for in-game humping a bunch. Attending the Puppy Bowl is kind of like if your local dog park was on a really fancy field: people just stand around smiling and watching dogs play. And dogs will be dogs! When they started mounting fellow players, the crowd giggled at the sight and after it was broken up, they got right back to the game. There was even a super sweet blind dog that apparently was the hottest dog in the game as many kept trying to get frisky with that one in particular!
  • Just like players, when dogs aren’t performing or seem to lose interest in the game, they come out to the sidelines. And just like human players, some of them whine about it.
  • “Rufferee” Dan Schachner is great. He has an undeniably great job getting to congratulate scoring puppies for a job well done and you can tell he’s having a blast interacting with both Team Ruff AND Team Fluff.
  • There is the biggest box of dog toys you’ve ever seen on the side of the field. They are constantly throwing new stuffed toys on the field for the doggies to play with. Your pet would be jealous. After the puppies rest up and hydrate leading up to the big game, they’re more than ready to run around and get all that playful energy out on the field.

The Puppy Bowl airs Sunday at 3pm ET/ 12 PT on Animal Planet.
