“Marvelous” news: Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel took the first three SAG awards given out this evening, for comedy series: Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor for Tony Shalhoub, Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor for Rachel Brosnahan, and the nine-member ensemble for Best Ensemble in a Comedy series.
It’s the first time since 2008 that one comedy swept the three categories: NBC’s 30 Rock took Best Ensemble, Tina Fey got the female actor nod and Alec Baldwin nabbed male comedy actor.
It was a great showing for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which also led the list of nominations with 4, after the praised dramedy had been snubbed completely by the SAG Awards for its breakout first season.
The marvelous Mrs. Maisel herself Brosnahan has amassed quite a collection of Hollywood award statuettes in the past couple of years for her role as a 1950s housewife who decides to become a stand-up comic: Two Golden Globes for best actress in a musical or comedy series, and a 2018 Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 2018’s (no surprise here) Emmy Outstanding Comedy Series.
Onstage, Shalhoub did all but turn his award for portraying Midge’s father, Abe Weissman, over to fellow nominee Alan Arkin (The Kominsky Method), calling Arkin his idol and saying he is “the reason I wanted to become an actor in the first place.”)
Backstage, the ensemble mock-struggled to fit all of their Actor statuettes onto the podium. Brosnahan said what she called the “resurgence” of the women’s movement was fortuitous with the timing of the show, and added she is hopeful about the future. But she warned that the battle for women in Hollywood is not over: “We have come a long way… but we have yet to follow through with the kind of action women deserve, and it’s even harder for women of color…we can’t stop, this is just the beginning.”
On a lighter note, Shalhoub echoed the rest of the cast in saying the wins for the show are still surprising. “I’ve given up trying to predict whether something will work or not work…I’m always wrong,” he joked. “This time, I wasn’t wrong.”
