Sebastian Maniscalco’s New Netflix Special Will Make You LOL The Next Time You Hit The Gym

Sebastian Maniscalco is truly one of the very best comedians out there today. He’s at the tip top of his game, as evidenced by his upcoming FOUR shows at Madison Square Garden, and today’s release of his latest stand-up special on Netflix, Stay Hungry. But perhaps what keeps him at the top of his game is that he remains 100% himself at every turn.

Stay Hungry is excellent because it’s consistent. Bits about his wife and her pleasant family, airplanes, and the gym aren’t necessarily revolutionary comedy topics, but from Maniscalco’s perspective, they’re as hilarious as ever. He delivers a set as strong as he’s ever been that will have you laughing the whole entire time. But it’s his observations at the gym that will give you a good old chuckle the next time you stop by for a workout, whether you’re a regular or a resolutioner.

Starting around the seven minute mark, Maniscalco explains why he’s “been doing the same workout since ’89” and then launches into the problems with showing up at the gym now, 30 years later. And honestly, if there was ever going to be a wise person to nail exactly what is wrong with people at the gym, of course it’s him.

Specifically, Maniscalco points out a universal problem with people on treadmills. Why this occurs all over the country (world?) we may never know, but I’m grateful he’s addressed it at all. He manages to cover the 7 incredibly irritating sins of a terrible treadmill neighbor, including:

  • someone choosing the treadmill directly next to him while there are eight available
  • taking all day to actually start using the machine
  • filling up all the compartments with their belongings
  • stretching on the treadmill instead of in the designated area
  • running so fast and hard the entire gym can hear
  • side stepping (!)
  • pausing to rest their feet on the side of the machine while it’s still going

And that doesn’t even include the water backpack. But really, make sure you stick around to hear about his experience at Soul Cycle, too.

Truly, there is no one that can take the mundane annoyances of life and make them as hilarious as Maniscalco does here. Stay Hungry is so, so funny and worth a watch — and if you’re really trying to burn those calories, you can even watch it while on the treadmill to keep that heart rate up. Not that he would recommend that, but maybe he’d make an exception.
