Stream It Or Skip It: ‘Back with the Ex’ On Netflix, An Australian Reality Show ‘90 Day Fiancé’ Fans Will Love

“What if the love of your life is also the one that got away?” Australian reality show Back with the Ex asks. Now streaming on Netflix, the series follows four couples, from those that have been apart for a few years to a few decades, as they reunite and try to figure out if they can, or should, give it another shot.

BACK WITH THE EX: STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?

Opening Shot: We get a brief introduction to each of the couples and a current day shot of them sitting on a couch, as they say a sentence or two about their ex and show an old-school pic of them together, before the show launches into an explanation of what Back with the Ex really is.

The Gist: Essentially, it’s couples that have broken up due to cheating or distance and the like, and are now attempting to reunite to find out if they really are destined to be together…or apart. There’s Peter and Diane who haven’t seen each other for 28 years and will capture your heart right away, Kate and Cam who are too cute to even believe it, Meg and Jeremy who get off to a rocky yet intriguing start, and Erik and Lauren who are also two overly attractive people on a dating reality show.

Our Take: Back with the Ex is the distant, Australian cousin to 90 Day Fiancé, a show where people in two separate parts of the world that met online finally come together to see if their relationship can work IRL. In this series, it’s people who have already had that IRL relationship, wondering if there could be MORE. Now, these people dated in their teens and 20’s, and now that they’re… a little to a lot older than that, it’s certainly interesting to see if the chemistry’s still there.

But, for those that love a reunion, are total suckers for true love, or even enjoy watching a relationship crumble, there’s more than enough here to get you excited.

Sex and Skin: “You look amazing. You’ve grown a few more chest hairs, I’ve noticed,” Kate says upon seeing her former love, Cam. “Yes, I have actually,” he confirms. “I’m quite proud of it. I’d actually shaved it all off at one point and then it grew back 10 times faster. Do you like it?” And don’t worry, we get a closeup shot of his chest hairs, ingrowns and all!

Plus, on Erik and Lauren’s date, Erik can’t WAIT to get naked for their drawing date. He’s already stated how proud he is of his hot bod and is simply thrilled to show it off to his lady friend.

Parting Shot: The couples go on dates and begin the reconnecting process, but the episode ends with each couple deciding if they want to sleep in their own hotel room or share a room. We get clear answers from all except Erik and Lauren, as the last shot we see is Lauren knocking on a hotel door. Is it his? Will she go in? There are six more episodes in the season to find out just how far the journey for these couples will go!

Sleeper Star: Peter and Diane, the couple that met nearly 30 years ago and are now divorced with nearly grown-up kids are absolutely adorable during their first interaction. The hugging, the giggling, they’re easily the couple you’ll root for the hardest based on this episode alone. The spark is palpable between these two, and even though Diane confirms they are in fact Facebook friends, watching them actually catch up face to face is sure to make you smile.

Most Pilot-y Line: The intros to these pairs say more than just the words they’re providing, that’s for sure, but perhaps no other couple is as up and down right away as Jeremy and Meg.

As, Jeremy explains, “We met at a party when I was 17. I remember I was thinking that Meg was hot. She’s hot, she looked really, just, hot. I do think I was punching above my weight. I don’t know how she ended up liking me, but I felt loved, she made me feel loved.”

He goes on to say, “There’s definitely two sides of Meg: there’s like, the fun and happy Meg, and then there’s the angry, bitchy Meg.” Gee, wonder why these two didn’t work out!

But for further proof, just keep watching. Because moments later, when we finally see Jeremy stroll back into Meg’s life, they haven’t been seated at the table for a full minute before she announces, “I feel overwhelmed, I feel really anxious and I want to get up, I’m getting up. I feel sick,” she says as she quickly departs to the bathroom. What!

Our Call: Stream It! It’s always fun to root for love to prevail, but it’s even more fun when there are Australian accents involved.
