‘King of the Hill’ Is Now on Hulu

After years of being conspicuously absent from streaming, it’s finally happened. Hank, Peggy, Bobby, and occasionally Luanne are finally available to stream. All seasons of King of the Hill are now on Hulu as proof that good things can still happen in 2018.

Created by Mike Judge and Greg Daniels, this Fox comedy is one of the best animated series out there. King of the Hill usurped the trend of similar shows from this time period like The Simpsons, South Park, and Family Guy, abandoning the wacky luxuries of animation to somberly focus on a single family in Arlen, Texas. Nothing too insane ever happened throughout King of the Hill’s 13 seasons. Sometimes Hank Hill (voiced by Judge) would get himself in an especially complicated social situation. Sometimes Peggy (voiced by Kathy Najimy) would get a bit too rambunctious and offensive. But the series never drifted far from its central story about one hyper conservative and traditional Texas man coming to terms with his hilarious and often emotional son Bobby (voiced by Pamela Adlon) and the changing world around him.

King of the Hill ran for 256 episodes from 1997 to 2010. During its 13 years on the air the series was nominated for seven Emmy Awards and won two, one of those wins going to Adlon for her superb voice acting work. But what always set this ever-calm series apart from similar animated fare was its emotional center. At its core King of the Hill was and remains an insightful, character-driven comedy that always values believability over cheap gags. The series was funny because the Hill family was always unintentionally funny in a hauntingly relatable way. You can’t watch Hank’s exasperated sigh without thinking of  a hundred dads who have given the same look.

There are a lot of new and excellent shows you could binge watch to kick off this weekend. But why would you do that when you can watch Hank accidentally get Bobby addicted to cigarettes? Yeah, that’s what I thought.
