‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Searches for Spock in First Season 2 Trailer

The long-awaited first look at Star Trek: Discovery Season 2 has finally entered our orbit. Since the show’s premise-redefining season finale back in February, fans (like myself) have been anxiously awaiting any updates on the CBS All Access series. During the show’s panel at Comic-Con International in San Diego, we finally got our first look at what’s to come for the crew of the USS Discovery.

Led by Sonequa Martin-Green’s Michael Burnham, the trailer shows the unified cast voyaging where no one has gone before. Whereas Season 1 of Discovery was a war season, a heavily-serialized action drama full of twists and intrigue, it looks like Season 2 is getting back to what makes Trek feel like Trek–albeit with the show’s distinctive modern flair intact.

As a prequel series set a decade before the original ’60s Star Trek, the new season of Discovery will be able to brush up against canon that Trekkies and Trekkers are very familiar with. In fact, the USS Discovery received a distress call from the USS Enterprise in the Season 1 finale! The connections keep on coming in Season 2, as Anson Mount has been cast as Christopher Pike, the captain that preceded Captain Kirk on the Enterprise. Rebecca Romijn will also appear as Captain Pike’s Number One, a role originally played by Majel Barrett Roddenberry. And, as showrunner Alex Kurtzman revealed during the panel, Spock–yes, Spock–is going to make an appearance this season.

In addition to Martin-Green, Season 2 will include returning cast members Doug Jones (Saru), Shazad Latif (Ash Tyler), Anthony Rapp (Paul Stamets), and Mary Wiseman (Sylvia Tilly). Additionally, Tig Notaro will appear in a recurring role.

The new season of Star Trek: Discovery will air on CBS All Access in 2019.
