‘Roseanne’ Canceled By ABC After Roseanne Barr’s Racist Tweet

Following a racist tweet from Roseanne Barr this morning, ABC has announced that Roseanne has been canceled.

ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey said in a statement:

Roseanne’s Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show.

This comes after outcry following Barr’s latest controversial Tweet, wherein she said that Valerie Jarrett, former adviser to President Obama, is the product of the Muslim Brotherhood and Planet of the Apes. In addition to the racist comparison, the deleted tweet also traded in on one of the extreme right’s disproven conspiracy theories that Jarrett wanted to make America “more Islamic.”

In the wake of the offending tweet, comedian Wanda Sykes–who served as a consulting producer on the revival–announced she would not return to the show.

Co-showrunner Whitney Cummings, who helped bring the revival back to life, departed the show earlier this month, with remaining showrunner Bruce Helford saying she was too busy to commit to another season.

Similarly, co-EP and cast member Sara Gilbert denounced the comments on Twitter.

Earlier today following the initial outcry, Barr apologized on Twitter and announced she was leaving the platform.

Barr has quit Twitter a number of times in the past. Her last break, which ultimately only lasted a few hours, came a few weeks ago when she left Twitter due to its “anti-Semitism.”

Barr’s tweets have been the subject of a few controversies since Roseanne’s return in March. In the days following the premiere of the Roseanne revival, Barr tweeted a Nazi salute at a Parkland shooting survivor. And around the same time as the Jarrett tweets earlier this morning, she picked a Twitter fight with Chelsea Clinton, calling her “Chelsea Soros Clinton.”

The Roseanne revival debuted to truly extraordinary ratings, with over 25 million people tuning in to the one-hour premiere within the first three days of it airing. The ratings declined significantly over the course of the 9-episode season, with the finale drawing in 10.58 million viewers. Still, that number made it the most-watched show on ABC–until now.
