Kimmy Gets Her Mary Tyler Moore On in ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’ First Look

When last we saw Kimmy Schmidt, she had failed out of/quit/gotten an honorary degree from Columbia University and was faced with the prospect of starting the next chapter in her life. Which is a thing that tends to happen on this show! And part of that next chapter involved taking a job at a quirky new tech startup. That sounds like a pretty good setup for a season’s worth of stories to me!

The just-released first look for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt‘s fourth season on Netflix suggests that, yes, it’s startup time for Kimmy. But, in the tradition of recent creatively ambitious Netflix teasers like those for One Day at a Time and GLOW, we’re getting a bit of a genre mash-up, in the form of Kimmy playing out a kind of That GirlMary Tyler Moore Show hybrid called “Little Girl, Big City.” With Jake Krakowski belting the theme song, of course. It’s pretty much what Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt would be if her naive attempts to conquer New York on her own was played straight instead of with heaps of pop-culture-literate irony.

It’s a compact 80 seconds that comes complete with a hat gag, a robot callback, a reference to women laughing alone with salad, and a dynamite record-scratch gag. In short, it’s everything we love about Kimmy Schmidt. It remains to be see if, like Titus Andromedon’s “Lemonade” parody last season, these fake opening credits will appear within the show itself, but it wouldn’t be a big surprise.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt returns on May 30th.
