However, for the purposes of this list, we combed through Netflix’s curated playlist and picked out the most critically acclaimed must-watches currently on the streaming service. From nudity-filled stories about teen orgies gone wrong to slow-burn reflections about the joys of youth from middle-aged protagonists, below are some of the best titles when it comes to foreign romances. 'Love'
This Gaspar Noé movie made headlines for being one of the first erotic films to be released in 3D. The French-Belgian film takes place over the course of five years as it follows the relationship between an American cinema film student and his former French girlfriend. It was met with mixed reviews, but still. 3D erotica is a pretty big selling point.
'Rezeta'
Directed by Fernando Frias, this Spanish-language comedy-drama follows a model in Mexico City who falls in love with an artist. The movie was Frias’ improvisational debut and stands as a fun and light-hearted watch.
'Aquarius'
Starring Sônia Braga, this drama follows a 65-year-old retired music critic who has to come to terms with her new life after a developer buys all the units around her. Packed with steamy flashbacks from her past and new hookups, this Brazilian–French film competed for the Palme d’Or at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival.
'Blue Is the Warmest Color'
Co-written, co-produced, and directed by Abdellatif Kechiche, this French drama tells the coming-of-age romance between two teenage women. The movie starts during their high school years and unwinds to include their early adulthood. Despite the controversy surrounding its depiction of sexuality, the film won the Palme d’Or at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival.
'My Golden Days'
Directed by Arnaud Desplechin, this 2015 French film is actually a prequel to 1996’s My Sex Life… or How I Got into an Argument. The drama follows a middle-aged anthropologist (Mathieu Amalric) as he reflects back on his youth and the love of his life (Lou Roy-Lecollinet). Some of those flashbacks get a little heated.
'Sex and Lucia'
Starring Paz Vega and Tristán Ulloa, this 2001 Spanish drama follows a waitress who’s trying to navigate life with her depressed writer boyfriend. The movie cuts between Lucía’s (Vega) passionate relationship with Lorenzo (Ulloa), both of their past relationships with other people, and Lorenzo’s novel as it tells the story of their romance.
'Whore's Glory'
Directed by Michael Glawogger, this documentary focuses on the lives of prostitutes in Thailand, Bangladesh and Mexico. The documentary takes care to make sure it portrays its subjects as individual subjects first and as members of the world of sex workers second. The film was largely met with critical praise.
'Bang Gang: A Modern Love Story'
What happens when you leave a teenager alone in a house for months at a time? If your first guess is wild sex parties, then you’re right. If your second guess includes multiple STDs and unplanned pregnancies, you’re also right. This French drama about young love and young mistakes has plenty of steamy scenes, but it doesn’t ignore the consequences of its nudity-filled plot.
'Y Tu Mamá También'
Directed by Alfonso Cuarón, this Mexican drama follows two teenage boys who take a road trip with a woman in her late twenties. What starts as a meandering trip quickly turns into an adventure full of hookups and budding young love.
'Young & Beautiful'
After losing her virginity, a young woman becomes a secret prostitute.

This French erotic film was nominated for the Palme d’Or at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. Directed by François Ozon, Young & Beautiful follows Isabelle (Marine Vacth), a 17-year-old student who loses her virginity during a summer romance. However, one thing leads to another, and Isabelle eventually starts her life as a secret prostitute.
'Immoral Tales'
This 1970s erotic anthology tells four explicit and sexually-charged stories about taboo topics.

This isn’t the most critically acclaimed film on this list, but from a formatting perspective, it’s one of the most interesting. Directed by Walerian Borowczyk, the 1973 French erotic anthology follows four stories about the loss of one’s virginity, masturbation, bloodlust, and incest. The film was criticized at the time for being too sexually explicit.
