Who Is The Whizzer? Meet ‘Marvel Jessica Jones’s New Hero

Jessica Jones has finally met a Golden Age Marvel superhero. Yeah, “the Whizzer” — not the Wizard – is not only a legit super speedster, he’s one of Marvel’s oldest characters.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Whizzer (Jay Klaitz) and how he fits into the larger Marvel Universe, and Marvel’s Jessica Jones Season 2.

Obviously, there are some spoilers for Marvel’s Jessica Jones ahead.

In Marvel’s Jessica Jones, Season 2, Episode 1, “AKA Start at the Beginning,” Jessica attempts to get back into the swing of things. That means we get treated to a comic montage of Krysten Ritter scoffing at some very unique characters who have come to Alias Investigations for help. One is Robert Coleman, a nervous nerd who claims that he not only has superpowers, but that someone is trying to kill him. Jessica initially discounts him, but it turns out that he is in fact telling the truth.

In Marvel’s Jessica Jones, Robert received his powers the same way that Jessica did: through the machinations of the mysterious shadow company IGH. He owns a pet mongoose named Emile, wears a canary yellow hoodie, and sports a blue backpack. However, things are a bit different for the Whizzer in the Marvel comics universe.

The Whizzer first appeared in USA Comics #1 in August 1941. His name is actually Robert Frank, but he got his super speed powers when he was bitten by a cobra during a trip to Africa. He was saved by a mongoose blood transfusion — don’t ask — and discovered that it was this that gave him his powers. The Whizzer wore a canary yellow suit with blue boots and, uh, underoos. Since he was a Golden Age hero, he often hung out with the likes of Bucky Barnes and Namor. Later he fell out of vogue and would occasionally pop up in new storylines. At one point, it was suggested that he was Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver’s father, but he’s not.

And yes, he’s called the Whizzer, not the Wizard. There is a Marvel character called the Wizard, but he’s a Fantastic Four character. Oh, and this is not him.
