Sophie Turner Sets The X-Men Universe On Fire In ‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’

It’s been a big week for Sophie Turner. Yesterday, the Game of Thrones star spilled that the HBO series’ final season won’t air until 2019, and today, she’s gracing the cover of Entertainment Weekly in the magazine’s First Look at X-Men: Dark Phoenix.

In the film, Turner stars as Jean Grey, a telepath whose life is forever changed when a solar flare hits the X-Jet. The flare ignites a powerful, malevolent force in Jean named the Phoenix, and the new, power-hungry identity threatens to overtake Jean’s soul, and even worse, divide the tightly-knit X-Men crew.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix takes place in 1992, about 10 years after the events of the 2016 movie X-Men: ApocalypseWhen the film opens, the X-Men crew–which features Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, James McAvoy as Charles Xavier, and Nicholas Hoult as Beast–is a marked change from their usual position as outcasts. According to McAvoy, Dark Phoenix is “probably the most emotional X-Men we’ve done and the most pathos-driven,” so get ready to catch some intense feels.

Director Simon Kinberg considers Jean’s storyline his passion project (he co-wrote X-Men: The Last Stand, which featured her story as a small sub-plot) and told Entertainment Weekly that he’s excited that her story will finally become a main focus. “The film was so clear in my head, emotionally and visually, that it would have killed me to hand this to somebody else to direct,” said Kinberg.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix is set to hit theaters on November 2, 2018.
