The Most Bingeable Shows And Movies Of The Summer, According To Amazon Channels

You can officially break out the flannel and treat yourself to something pumpkin flavored. Summer is over, and autumn is here. Between the Emmys and the never-ending slate of new shows, fall is typically the most important season for television. However, everyone knows the best time to lounge around, turn off your mind, and have a mini TV-fueled vacation is actually summer.

There’s been a lot of discussion about what the defining show of this summer was. We may not be able to tell you with certainty whether HBO’s Game of Thrones or Showtime’s Twin Peaks earned that coveted title, but thanks to Amazon we do have a good idea of what the year’s most popular binge may be. Using data from its Amazon Channels option, Amazon was able to compose the most popular binges across all of its linked streaming services from January 1, 2017 to September 7, 2017. Not only that, but the data team was also able to tell us the most popular books and bands that accompany these excellent binges.

But before we get into the definite ranking, it’s important to clarify a couple of points. This data comes from Amazon Channels, which means it only reflects the viewing habits of streamers who have subscribed to their HBO, Showtime, STARZ, or other accounts through Amazon Channels. Also, this tally doesn’t include shows from Netflix or Hulu. Though you can access Netflix and Hulu through Amazon products like the Amazon Fire TV Stick, there is currently not a way to link your Netflix or Hulu accounts through the Amazon Channels option.

The difference between “most watched” and “most binged” also needs to be addressed. Amazon defines “binge watching” as watching every episode of a season within three days. Because of this, past seasons of finished shows like Girls can be included on the list, but big-name hits that were currently airing in the middle of summer, like Game of Thrones, cannot. Keeping that in mind, here are what Amazon says are the most binged series of the year so far:

Using the interconnectedness of Amazon, the data team was able to break these findings down even further. For example, if your favorite binge of the summer was HBO’s excellent music docuseries The Defiant Ones, you were most likely to read Small Great Things: A Novel and listen to The Beatles. Of course, these findings only reflect the streaming, reading, and listening habits of subscribers who do all three through Amazon. Still, the results are interesting, especially since two books in particular keeps appearing:

1. The Defiant Ones: Season 1 (HBO)

  • Most Read Book: Small Great Things: A Novel
  • Most Listened to Artist on Amazon Music: The Beatles

2. Ballers: Season 1 (HBO)

  • Most Read Book: The Fix (Memory Man Series: Book 3)
  • Most Listened to Artist on Amazon Music: Eric Church

3. Girls: Season 5 (HBO)

  • Most Read Book: Big Little Lies
  • Most Listened to Artist on Amazon Music: The Beatles

4. Insecure: Season 1 (HBO)

  • Most Read Book: The Handmaid’s Tale
  • Most Listened to Artist on Amazon Music: Sia

5. Girls: Season 4 (HBO)

  • Most Read Book: Big Little Lies
  • Most Listened to Artist on Amazon Music: Vince Guaraldi

6. Silicon Valley: Season 1 (HBO)

  • Most Read Book: Alexander Hamilton
  • Most Listened to Artist on Amazon Music: Straight No Chaser

7. Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood: Season 8 (PBS Kids)

  • Most Read Book: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
  • Most Listened to Artist on Amazon Music: Andy Williams

8. Silicon Valley: Season 2 (HBO)

  • Most Read Book: 1984
  • Most Listened to Artist on Amazon Music: Straight No Chaser

9. Ballers: Season 2 (HBO)

  • Most Read Book: The Handmaid’s Tale
  • Most Listened to Artist on Amazon Music: Michael Bublé

10. The Girlfriend Experience: Season 1 (STARZ)

  • Most Read Book: The Secret Wife: A Captivating Story of Romance, Passion and Mystery
  • Most Listened to Artist on Amazon Music: Kelly Clarkson

There are a few interesting takeaways here. It’s certainly not news that people love HBO, but it’s interesting to see how bingeing friendly its comedies are compared to its dramas. Of the top 10 binges, eight were HBO programs, and seven of those eight were comedies. It’s also interesting to see which comedies people actually seem to be watching. Though the critical darling Veep is absent from this list, Ballers, Girls, and Silicon Valley all have multiple entries.

However, possibly the most interesting finding has to do with Insecure and The Defiant Ones. Insecure Season 1’s fourth place slot confirms the show’s mass appeal, but seeing the compelling and often overlooked docuseries The Defiant Ones take top place is a refreshing reveal. Also, given HBO’s runaway success with Big Little Lies and Hulu’s breakout hit with The Handmaid’s Tale, it’s unsurprising to see that both books made the list multiple times.

The list of most streamed movies on Amazon Channels is a more direct reflection of what people were watching this summer. According to Amazon, this data was collected from Memorial Day to August 31, 2017. It spans the viewing habits of all Amazon subscribers who streamed movies across their subscribed Amazon Channels. This list also reflects where viewers watched each movie:

Storks! You can always count on a kids’ movie you’ve forgotten about to surprise you. It’s also interesting to see Suicide Squad taking third place, which proves that even if people aren’t interested in seeing something in theaters, they’re always willing to stream an intensely hyped flop. There are actually quite a few blockbuster failures on this list, from Independence Day: Resurgence to the under-performing 2016 version of Ghostbusters. However, the list also has several big budget, action-packed movies on here, proving that the blockbuster is alive and well when it comes to streaming.

Here’s to a great season of television and movies. Happy streaming everyone!
