Sesame Street

Today marks the end of an era and the dawn of a new day. Sesame Street is no longer the flagship children’s show of the non-profit network PBS. Instead, it’s the jewel in the crown of HBO Kids — the premium cable channel and streaming service’s new children’s entertainment platform.

At 6 AM ET this morning, the classic Sesame Street catalogue went live on HBO Kids. If you have HBO NOW or HBO GO, then you already have HBO Kids. It’s not a separate app, but a section available on both streaming services. This is where you can stream current seasons and classic episode of the show at your leisure. Introduce your kids to your favorite Sesame Street moments from childhood — or take an innocent trip down memory lane yourself.

HBO’s first original season of Sesame Street also debuted this morning. Two brand new back-to-back half hour episodes are airing in HBO’s 9 AM – 10 AM slot. The same episodes will air in Spanish on HBO Latino in the same time slot.

The new episodes of Sesame Street will only be a half-hour long so that they can produce more episodes per season. HBO’s version will have all the same Muppets we’ve come to know and love, but the set is said to be brand new. Vulture is likening it to “gentrification,” citing the fact that the original set — designed in muted colors to reflect the New York City of the ’70s and to make the colorful muppets’ vibrant fur pop on TV — has been revamped to look fresher. Abby Cadabby is going to have a community garden to play in and Elmo has moved into Gordon and Susan’s brownstone. Big Bird is getting his own massive nest. No word yet on whether or not rent hikes have forced Oscar the Grouch to move out of his classic pre-war style metal trash can and into a government-subsidized compost heap.
