Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief

Although she was not featured in Alex Gibney‘s explosive documentary Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief, which premiered on HBO earlier this year, former King of Queens star Leah Remini has been very vocal about her own experiences while a member of the controversial religion. And she’s now speaking out against the most famous member of the church: Tom Cruise.

Remini was a longtime member of the Church of Scientology until 2013, when she publicly broke from the religion (and was subsequently labeled a “suppressive person”). Remini’s break coincided with Lawrence Wright’s 2013 book that served as the basis for Gibney’s documentary (and featured interviews with another famous ex-Scientologist, Oscar-winning director and screenwriter Paul Haggis). Remini has maintained a high profile since she left the church two years ago, particularly with a gig on Dancing With the Stars. Now, she has an upcoming tell-all book that details some of the things she experienced while being a high-standing member of the church — and she’s very critical of Cruise, who was a major subject of Going Clear.

In an upcoming interview with 20/20 to promote her memoir, titled Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology, Remini pretty much repeats what Going Clear asserts: that Tom Cruise is a powerful asset for the Church of Scientology and has achieved near saint-like status. “Being critical of Tom Cruise is being critical of Scientology itself,” she said.

Remini’s interview on 20/20 airs this Friday. Watch Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief on HBO Go and HBO Now.
