#NetflixAndChill: It Doesn’t Mean Watch Netflix and Chill

You know how you just want the simple things in your romantic life? Like the opportunity to care for another human, and have that feeling reciprocated? Or the notion of cuddling up with that person to watch a movie? Because you’re not asking for a lot! You’re not asking for someone to take you to fancy dinners! You’re not asking for a proposal! You just want someone to share your love of Gilmore Girls or Orange is the New Black with. Right?
But, just like most things in life, that innocent dream seems to have soured. Case in point: the trending meme #NetflixAndChill. What does it mean? Well, let’s put it this way: #NetflixAndChill is the new “Would you like to come up for a drink?” Meaning, the person asking you to come over and “watch Netflix and chill” is not saying: “I enjoy your company, please spend a simple and lovely evening in with me.” The person is saying “Let’s bang.” And if that’s your thing, then all the power to you! But if you really thought you were going stream The Notebook or binge-watch Friends with your potential significant other who just texted you “Netflix and chill?”, I’m sorry to inform you….that’s probably not what’s happening.
