10 Fun Family Films Available To Stream On Netflix

The Boxtrolls opens in theaters nationwide this weekend and the stop-motion animation flick is touting itself as one of those “fun for the whole family” kind of movies. But what does that even mean?

Truly great family films are hard to come by. First of all, they have to be accessible enough for small children to handle, original enough to capture a tween’s attentions, and witty enough to entertain mom and dad. Family films have to walk a tightrope between being sweet and smart, but most of all, they have to be fun.

If you can’t make it out to the theaters this weekend — or if you’re just dying for a respite from watching Frozen again for the umpteenth million time — here are 10 fun family films that you can stream on Netflix right now.

1

'The Great Muppet Caper'

The Muppets have always taken on fun, funny, and family-friendly adventures. In The Great Muppet Caper, Kermit plays a journalist who travels to London to investigate the fabulous Lady Holiday’s missing jewels. He mistakes Miss Piggy for Lady Holiday, falls in love, and they all get involved in the madness. (N.B. This movie is one of this writer’s all-time favorite films. John Cleese and Joan Plowright give restaurant advice. Dame Diana Rigg looks fabulous. There’s a non-sensical bit in the park between Peter Falk and Kermit the Frog. IT’S AMAZING.) [Netflix]

2

'The Karate Kid' (1984)

The Karate Kid is one of those films that you loved during your totally ’80s childhood, and now your kids can stream it anytime they want on their tablet or streaming device. Jaden Smith might have tried to take the mantle a few years ago, but Ralph Macchio lives forever as the original Karate Kid. [Netflix]

3

'Robin Hood' (1973)

Not all great Disney cartoons bring fairy tales to life, and not all amazing kids’ films are about princesses. Robin Hood retells the classic story of Sherwood Forest’s most politically conscious criminal by framing it in a world of charming anthropomorphic animals. Oh, and there’s an amazing folk soundtrack. A must-see for movie lovers of all ages. [Netflix]

4

'Holes'

Long before Shia LaBeouf was having strange breakdowns on the streets of New York City, he was an adorable tween star. In 2003, LaBeouf helped bring Louis Sachar’s beloved book, Holes, to life on the big screen. The film is cool, fun, and a little bit creepy. It’s a perfectly atmospheric film that you can share with the whole family. [Netflix]

5

'The Parent Trap' (1998)

Speaking of former child stars… Lindsay Lohan wasn’t always a disaster. She was once one of the most talented kids working in Hollywood. She was poised to have one of the biggest careers of all time. And it all started with The Parent Trap. Sneer if you must, but Nancy Meyers’ sweet ’90s remake of the Hayley Mills classic is positively delightful. The reason it all works? The insane talent of a pint-sized Lilo. Watch it with your family tonight. At the very least, you can use Lohan as a cautionary tale for your kids. [Netflix]

6

'Hugo'

Just because it’s family film night doesn’t mean you shouldn’t all enjoy the work of a true auteur. Martin Scorcese surprised fans when he made Hugo, a sweet film about a brilliant orphan living in a Paris train station and his quest to unravel a mystery. [Netflix]

7

'The Secret of Kells'

Tired of Disney animation and traditional fairy tale movies? The Secret of Kells uses dreamy animation to tell the mystic story of Ireland’s most prized piece of literature (that wasn’t written by James Joyce): The Book of Kells. The independent film was nominated for a 2010 Oscar and should serve as a welcome respite from Frozen. [Netflix]

8

'The Nightmare Before Christmas'

The Everett Collection

Is The Nightmare Before Christmas a Christmas film? Is it a Halloween film? One thing’s for sure: Tim Burton most definitely had a lot to do with it. It might be the most macabre selection on this list, but trust us, your little ones can handle the perverse beauty of this film. There’s enough humor, heart, and absurdity to offset any scares. [Netflix]

9

'The Mighty Ducks'

Okay, so we’re not saying that The Mighty Ducks could ever double for fine art, but it is an absolute delight. Lighten up a bit, guys. Your kids should know that life is about more than Scorsese films and Tim Burton creations. [Netflix]

10

'The Prince of Egypt'

If you’re looking for some more Biblical fare, why not watch The Prince of Egypt? The gorgeously animated film retells the story of Exodus for a whole new generation. Oh, and it features a killer pop soundtrack. [Netflix]
