‘Happy Valley’ Recap: Season 1, Finale

Catherine’s son Daniel drunkenly reveals information regarding the cause of Becky’s suicide, while Tommy comes up with a plan to spend time with his son in the gripping finale of Netflix’s Happy Valley.

The shit show: Clare throws Catherine a birthday party despite Catherine’s protests and invites everyone including Richard and his wife, Daniel and his wife, Catherine’s patrol partner, and the Gallaghers. Daniel starts chugging wine to the face and spouting about how fucked up it is Catherine and Richard have started sleeping together again. It’s a miracle Richard’s wife doesn’t hear him before Richard and Catherine corner him into the next room to calm him down. It’s then that Daniel reveals that Becky “liked Tommy,” that she was always making terrible decisions, and that she “was asking for it.” Apparently immediately following Becky’s death, Catherine lashed out at Daniel, asking him why he couldn’t have been the one to die. Yikes. Well, it wouldn’t have been a family party without dysfunction.

The Gallaghers: Catherine pays Nevison a visit to finally speak to him about Ann’s rape. He offers to repay her for her daughter’s well-being and recovery by taking on her mortgage. Catherine is hesitant, and it’s never revealed whether or not she says yes.

Kevin Weatherill: Nevison visits Kevin in prison only for Kevin to reveal why he had Ann kidnapped. Kevin still sincerely believes that it’s all Nevison’s fault and that if he had been granted a raise in the first place, he would have never had to go to such drastic measures. Oddly enough, for the first time since we first met Kevin he isn’t blubbering like an idiot and sweating nervously. He’s cool, calm, and collected as he basically tells Nevison to shove it up his arse.

Ashley Cowgill: He got shot in the face. That’s it really. He rats out his connections to the fuzz and pays the price in broad daylight by a man on a motorcycle.

The case: The police keep running into dead ends tracking down Tommy Lee Royce and Lewis Whippey until a complaint is called into the district about an awful smell coming from an apartment in the slums of Yorkshire. Sure enough, they find Lewis and his friend rotting away and discover that Tommy is surely on the run — only he couldn’t have gotten far because he lost a ton of blood.

Tommy: Is desperate to remain under the radar. He skips the much-needed hospital trip in search of a place to stay. He comes upon a tiny house boat, breaks in, rests up, then goes out looking for Ryan. Ryan was recently allowed to bike home from school (HUGE MISTAKE when a crazed killer is still on the lose, but hey, I have no kids of my own so what do I know?), and is cornered by Tommy en route. Tommy reveals who he is and that yes, he’s Ryan’s dad. In fact, he must have said, “I’m your dad,” a total of about 100 times in 20 minutes. Tommy take Ryan back to the boat for a couple of days for some father-son time, which is foiled when Ryan decides to bring a friend over. Now that the secret is out, Tommy makes the decision to hold Tommy hostage next time they’re together so they can die together. As if this kid wasn’t screwed up enough as it is.

Catherine: Returning to work too soon, Catherine gets in a screaming match with her boss about the incompetency of the system before ripping off her stripes and storming out. While visiting Becky’s grave, she gets a call from Clare saying Ryan never came home. When she calls his friend’s mother, she finds out Ryan has been visiting his dad lately. Catherine and Clare book it to the docks to find Tommy and Ryan doused in gasoline and Tommy clutching a lighter. A ball of adrenaline at this point, Catherine takes down Tommy, saves Ryan, beats Tommy to a pulp, but spares his life so he can rot in jail.

Where it left us: After a terrifying hostage situation, Tommy Lee Royce is finally caught by the police. Catherine is told by her lieutenant to take a few more weeks off until she’s made a full mental recovery. She tries to repair her relationship with her son and help Ryan recover from the trauma of what Tommy put him through. In the final scenes, Catherine recalls the events of the past few months, seemingly satisfied that Tommy got his. As far as next season goes, it seems we’ll be dealt a brand new hand of cases and drama.
